Lecture with Practice/Tutorial
What is typical for the format?
A lecture is a classic large group event in the lecture hall, which traditionally takes place for 90 minutes in weekly intervals. Teaching presentations, lectures and demonstrations are often used to convey content.
Occasionally, lectures are designed to be interactive in presence, i.e. they offer room for questions, queries and/or discussions with the students in addition to a lecture part. Especially in the natural sciences, lectures are usually accompanied by tutorials (in smaller groups).
Students learn by listening to your lecture, taking notes on what they have heard/seen and/or by revising a script or the presentation slides.

How can the format be digitized or digitally supported?
Semester planning
The basis for a good online course is good planning. Therefore, please remember to first plan a rough structure for the semester and then consider how you would like to implement this planning with the digital tools. Use the infographics further down on this page to find out how you can plan, implement and conduct your course (media-) didactically.
Tools for implementation
The following tools are available for the fast digitalization or digital support of your lecture:
1. ILIAS course room
Not everything on ILIAS is self-explanatory, but if you deal with it, you will see that you will quickly find your way around:
2. Lecture recordings / e-lectures (asynchronous)
Already existing lecture recordings can be integrated into an ILIAS course room. Provide slides for follow-up work.
3. E-lectures / learning videos
Produce e-lectures for your lectures by adding sound to your lecture slides on the desktop.
Make sure to create shorter units (max. 15 min.), that can be better processed
by the students, preferably linked to reflection questions or work assignments.
To make teaching content that requires a visual component understandable, it is a good idea to create a learning video.
Find out here about available/recommended video and authoring tools. Choose a tool that is easily available for you and that also causes you as little technical effort as possible. Even with simple means, a lot can be achieved!
You can integrate your e-lectures (and learning videos) as videos (or, depending on the authoring tool used, in HTML format) into your ILIAS course and provide further online resources for self-learning.

4. Online support / communication / organization
Use suitable communication tools (mail, forum) in your ILIAS course room to provide space for questions to the teacher, for exchange of information, or to offer online consultation hours for advising.
5. Web conference & live stream (synchronous)
In principle, lectures can be held via web conferences or live stream. Currently, we receive many requests on how to implement video-based live scenarios with students. There are several technical possibilities you can resort to.

Course template "Lecture"
We have created a course template "Lecture" for you:
- You can use the templates to access a course structure that is already created. Especially if you have not yet worked with ILIAS a lot, this can be helpful.
- Adjust the templates so that they fit your semester planning. The existing structure is only an example.
- The templates mainly show the basic functions ILIAS has to offer. Of course, we would be pleased to show you further functions as well.

Here you will find the ILIAS course templates (the lecture template is available only in German language, but can be adapted; the seminar template is available in English) as well as an online tutorial where you will learn how to copy the course templates (in German).
Notes on the use of the course templates:
- In order to use our templates, you must first log in to the central learning platform of the University of Freiburg with your university account. You can only see the course links to the templates once you are logged in.
- Please navigate to the original templates (folder: ILIAS Kursvorlagen) using the course links provided here and then copy the template. We have also described all steps in the online tutorial for you.
