Screenpresso is an easy-to-use screenshot tool that allows you to take screenshots and screen videos of your desktop, edit them with the image or video editor, and then embed them, e.g. in ILIASor the university's video server.

Screenpresso is free of charge for university employees, but it can only be installed on Windows. macOS users can use the QuickTime player instead.

QuickTime Player is a free alternative to Screenpresso for macOS users and offers a very similar range of functions.

With Camtasia you can easily create screencasts including webcam recordings and edit the recordings with a clearly arranged video editing editor even for video beginners in a semi-professional and relatively fast way. Camtasia is subject to a charge; there is no campus license for teachers. Licenses for Windows and Mac can be purchased from the University of Freiburg's software shop at the Edu-Price.

For those who prefer open source software, we recommend OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) as a very comprehensive and free alternative for video recording. OBS can be used both on Windows, MacOS and Linux. Comprehensive configuration options mean potentially more effort during production, but on the other hand it also offers many individual possibilities to design the recording according to your own wishes. This tool is therefore more suitable for those of you who are already somewhat familiar with the subject matter or are willing to invest a lot of time.

Depending on which program is used to produce videos, the export may result in videos with properties that cannot be processed by the "ViMP" video portal, for example. Errors occur in the conversion, as a result of which the upload is not completed. 
Such problems have recently occurred mainly in connection with audio slides in PowerPoint, but can also happen through the use of other programs.
When such problems occur, or to avoid them in advance, you can use the free open-source software "Handbrake", which can be used to convert videos to all possible formats. It can be downloaded and installed on any common operating system.
Handbrake is a very comprehensive tool with countless configuration options, which requires some training if the possibilities are to be fully exploited.
In the university scenario, where it is mainly a matter of storing or uploading videos in the right format in sufficient quality at the right place and within the right time, a few simple steps will do, as demonstrated in the following instructions.

If you embed your video with the Vimp object in ILIAS and notice that the quality of your dubbed PPT is significantly reduced or the image is distorted, for example, please check whether you have recorded your slides in 4:3 format. Standard for some time now is 16:9 format (for slides as well as for videos). Therefore, Vimp converts uploaded videos, which in some cases can lead to distortion. In the following guide, we explain how to quickly and easily convert your 4:3 slide videos to a lossless 16:9 manually before uploading it to Vimp.

However, you should ideally make sure that you create your videos in the correct aspect ratio during production. The following guide shows you how to do this.
