matching question
The matching question allows you to assign the given answers (terms) to the correct generic terms (definitions) by moving them.
Possible applications:
- Highlighting the connection between two or more terms
- Assigning terms/events to the corresponding illustrations
- Assigning the two parts of the sentence to each other
- Assigning objects to a specific system (e.g., species of the genus, elements of the periodic table to groups, etc.)
How to create a question:
- Enter a title and, optionally, another author, a description, and a status in the lifecycle for your question.
- Enter your question.
- Under Assignment mode, you can choose between 1:1 assignment (one term can be assigned to one definition) or n:n assignment (one or more terms can be assigned to one or more definitions).
- Enter the definitions to which terms are to be assigned. Click on the (+) icon to add further definitions.
- Enter the terms that are to be assigned to the definitions. Click on the (+) icon to add further terms.
- Definitions and terms form assignment pairs that must be combined in a meaningful way. Movable boxes (terms) are assigned to fixed boxes (definitions).
Under Assignment pairs, specify which term belongs to which definition and how many points can be earned for a correct answer. Click on the (+) icon again to add further answer options. - Click on the Save button.
- ILIAS will save your entries.
Helpful tips for creating:
- You can also create a matching question in such a way that the number of definitions and terms is not identical. In this case, there will be terms or definitions left over that cannot be matched. This increases the level of difficulty and reduces the probability of guessing correctly.
- Add images in addition to or instead of definitions and terms. Click on the Select file button. ILIAS opens your browser's upload dialog. Select an image. Click on the Upload button.
- Depending on the question, you have various options for matching:
- Text-to-text
- Text-to-image
- Image-to-image
- In the Shuffle answers drop-down menu, select whether and how the definitions and terms should be shuffled. You have four options:
- No mixing
- Both (terms and definitions are mixed)
- Only terms are mixed
- Only definitions are mixed
- Select the n:n assignment mode if you want to assign multiple terms to a definition or vice versa.
- Change the size of a graphic by entering a value ≥ 20 in the Preview Size section.
Notes on scoring the question:

Special features of this question type:
- For correct functionality, it is necessary to disable the option to display the desktop view in the Safari browser on the iPad.
