ViMP Object
What is a ViMP Object?
The ILIAS object "ViMP" offers a possibility to integrate videos into the course room. It is the video server of the University of Freiburg. This means that videos that are integrated into a course via this object will be stored on the video server.
What can the ViMP Object be used for?
The video upload via the ViMP object offers the advantage that the upload limit is much higher than the one of the mediacast, namely 10GB. That means, you have the possibility to upload larger video files as well. Via the plugin, the videos can be managed and integrated in different courses, so a multiple upload is not necessary.
Example: Integrating self-produced learning videos
You have created an elaborate learning video using drawings, effects and the like. Since you want to make it available to your students in a high resolution, the file size goes beyond the scope of the mediacast. So you can now integrate the video via ViMP and store it on the video server, which provides more storage space. The correct format is automatically generated during the upload.
Important note for videos that appear distorted:
If you have added sound to a PowerPoint file and recorded the slides in the "old" format 4:3, the video will be converted to 16:9 when uploaded via ViMP and will appear distorted. Please use the tutorial below to convert 4:3 videos to 16:9 yourself before uploading them. Afterwards the quality will be correct when you call it up again.
Note on Video Frame Rate (fps):
Sometimes, video uploads may fail due to conversion issues. One potential reason could be a low frame rate. Based on our experience, the ViMP video server has problems with videos that have less than 15 fps. Therefore, we recommend producing and uploading videos with 24/30 fps. These are also the standard values used by common video production tools.
How does it work?
You can create videos via the ViMP object directly in your ILIAS course or ILIAS group. Use the green button "Add New Item" to select the ILIAS object "ViMP video" and integrate it directly into your course/group.
1st Step: Button "Add New Item”

2nd Step: Select object "ViMP Video"

The following tutorials describe functionality and procedures in detail, as well as the conversion of 4:3 videos to 16:9:

If you embed your video with the Vimp object on ILIAS and notice that the quality of your PPT with added sound is significantly reduced, please check if you have recorded your slides in 4:3 format. The 16:9 format has been the standard for some time now (both for slides and videos). Therefore, ViMP converts uploaded videos, which leads to distortion. In the following instructions, we will explain how to quickly and easily convert your 4:3 slide videos to a lossless 16:9 before uploading them to Vimp.
