Media Pool
What is a Media Pool?
A "media pool" is an ILIAS object that you can use to manage media files (images, graphics, animations, audio or video files). Furthermore, the media pool allows you to create so-called content modules that you can use in the creation of ILIAS learning modules.
Please note: Media pools are not visible to course members by default as they are intended to serve as containers for organizing and collecting files, which can then be embedded elsewhere in ILIAS.
What can the Media Pool be used for?
- The advantage of a shared media pool is that all files have to be uploaded to ILIAS only once and can then be embedded in different learning contents as often as you like.
- If individual media objects in the media pool are updated, all learning content containing the media object is automatically updated as well.
Example: Media pool "Graphics on the subject of botany"
In the discipline of biology, much is explained using graphics and pictures. In the subject area of botany, it is useful to work with good pictures. For example, photographs can better illustrate the characteristics of the plant, while photographs taken with microscopes can make cell structures visible.
With the help of the media pool, teachers who are responsible for this subject area in teaching can create a joint collection of suitable pictures and graphics. If, for example, a graphic is exchanged in the shared media pool because a better version has been found, it can be updated centrally in the media pool. This graphic is then updated in the courses of all participants who access this graphic via the media pool. This saves work for the individual.
