What is a category?
A "category" is an ILIAS object that is used to structure the entire ILIAS installation. Like courses and groups, the category belongs to the so-called "container objects". These container objects can in turn contain other ILIAS objects such as wikis, learning modules etc. (similar to the folder structure you know from your laptop or desktop PC, e.g. "My Documents" would be very similar).
What can the category be used for?
- In a business context, this can be used to map different departments.
- If you transfer the application to the structure of a university, you would normally create a category for each faculty.
Example: Using categories in the "Repository"
In the repository, we also use categories to give our central learning platform a good basic structure.
- First of all, we work with categories to sort the content by area:
- Current semester: Here you will find additional categories and the courses they contain that relate to the current semester.
- Contents for students of all semesters: This contains categories and courses that are required for all semesters, i.e. do not exactly follow the "semester rhythm".
- Student study groups: Only students have access to this category to organize their own study groups.
- There are also categories that prepare for the coming semester or represent other offers (e.g. central services):
- Courses in upcoming semester: Semester in preparation
- Documentation & Online Help on ILIAS: This is a central service of the e-learning department that offers support on how to use ILIAS.
How does it work?
The following tutorial describes functionality and procedures in detail:
