Feature of the Month: Item Group

Redaktion, Abt E-Learning [Redaktion] - 1. Juli 2026, 00:10

The Item Group (Objekteblock) is an important tool if you want to add more structure to your ILIAS course. With an  Item Group, you can group different materials and objects together to create thematic or organizational blocks.

For example, you can group a file, a test, and a learning module on the same topic into a single block and give this "package" a title. Using the "Edit Page" feature, you can place blocks of objects anywhere on the page.

For example, a course's home page might be laid out as shown in the screenshot: a welcome message and sessions in the left column, and three Item Groups for communication, assignments, and group work in the right column.

How do I create an Item Group?

Item Groups can be created in course and group rooms and in folders.

  1. Click "Add New Object" and then click "Item Group" in the "Organisation" section.
  2. Give the block a name.
  3. Under the "Settings" tab, you can change the block's title and behavior (e.g., whether the title should be displayed and whether the block is open or closed).

How do I assign materials to the Item Group?

Click the blue arrow and select "Select Objects" (1)

You can now include objects already available in the course room by checking them (2)
or use "Add New Object" to create additional objects directly. Save your changes. (3)

How do I sort the materials in the object block?

  1. In the course settings, under "Display" --> "Sorting" --> "Manual," enable this option.
  2. The "Sort" submenu item will now appear on your course's content page.
  3. You can use this to arrange the items in the order you want.

How do I arrange Group Items in my course?

You can use the "Edit Page" feature to drag object blocks to any location on the course page. Newly created Group Items appear at the very bottom of the page. You can drag them into one of the placeholders by holding down the left mouse button (plus sign --> possible areas turn yellow). Alternatively, you can cut the Group Items and paste them elsewhere.

To arrange the Group Items on the left or right side of the course room, for example, you must first create columns: Click one of the plus signs --> "Insert Column Layout." Now you can drag the Group Item into one of the columns. For more information and instructions on column layouts, see our blog post.

Group Items and Tile View

You can enable or disable the tile view in the Group Item independently of the overall course view. To do this, go to the Group Item settings and select "Presentation view for content" --> "List."
