Feature of the Month: Internal and external links
ILIAS offers the ability—via the editor (e.g., through "Edit Page"), as well as in learning modules, wikis, blogs, etc.—to link learning content together or make external materials accessible, which facilitates the use of additional resources.
When embedding links, a distinction is made between internal and external links.
Internal links
Internal links point to an existing object in ILIAS (e.g., pages, chapters, glossary terms, etc.). These are not traditional web addresses in the form of hyperlinks, but rather references to an object or page within ILIAS. This has the advantage that internal links continue to work even if the linked object has been moved.
To insert an internal link, follow these steps:
- Click on “Edit Page.” On an ILIAS page and in the wiki, this is a blue or green button. In learning modules, you can access this feature via the blue arrow.
- If necessary, display the tools (1). In the editor, select the text you want to link (2), click on “Link,” and select “Internal Link” (3)
- In the window that opens, search the magazine or selected learning modules, wikis, or glossaries for the object, page, or term you want to link to.
- Finally, click “Finish editing text.” The internal link is now active. It will continue to work even if the target object is moved.
External links
You can use external links to refer to pages located outside of ILIAS, such as academic articles, websites, YouTube videos, or PDFs.
Follow these steps:
- As described above, click "Edit Page" and select the text you want to link in the page editor.
- Now select "External Link" (1) and enter the URL between the quotation marks (2).
Tip
Check whether the destination is accessible to users and that there are no access restrictions (paywalls, logins, etc.).
Link email addresses
To link email addresses so that clicking on them opens your email program, follow the same steps as for external links:
- Select the email address and click "External Link" (1).
- Now replace https:// with mailto: and enter the email address after it (2).
