Seminar
What is typical for the format?
In a seminar with a limited number of participants (up to approx. 25), in-depth content on a specific topic is usually developed. In classical seminars, special topics are often worked on and presented by the students themselves. Meanwhile in project or research seminars, students carry out projects or small research projects and present the results on their own.
Seminars serve to deepen learning, e.g. through discussion and reflection, the active and self-directed application of what has been learned and the stimulation of scientific work.
Collaborative work and the supervision / support of students are of central importance in seminars.

How can the format be digitized or digitally supported?
Semester planning
The basis for a good online course is good planning. Therefore, please remember to first plan a rough structure for the semester and then consider how you would like to implement this planning with the digital tools (e.g. as Flipped/Inverted Classroom, see Blended Learning Formats).
Use the infographics further down on this page to find out how you can plan, implement and conduct your course (media-) didactically.

How can the format be digitized or digitally supported?
The following tools are available for the fast digitalization or digital support of your lecture:
1. ILIAS course room
Not everything on ILIAS is self-explanatory. But you will see that you will quickly find your way around once you familiarize yourself with it:
2. Online support / communication / organization
Use suitable communication tools (mail, forum, chat) in your ILIAS course room to accompany and support your students and for common subject-specific exchange. If necessary, offer online consultation hours to compensate for missing office hours in person.
3. E-Lectures / learning videos / learning materials
Learning materials can be made available to students in various formats online in a course on the ILIAS learning platform.
If you have planned to include presentations/lectures in your seminars, you can produce e-lectures. For example, this could be done by adding sound to your PowerPoint slides on the desktop, creating learning videos, or using suitable YouTube videos. Self-created podcasts are also a contemporary format for word contributions.
Encourage students to also make their learning results available in these formats in the course, e.g. by using the Mediacast object.
In interactive videos, you can integrate questions of comprehension or reflection, or jump to label-specific comments.
Here, you can find information about available/recommended video and authoring tools. Choose a tool that is easily available for you and brings you as little technical effort as possible. Even with simple means a lot can be achieved!
You can integrate podcasts in mp3 format, e-lectures (and learning videos) in mp4 format (or, depending on the authoring tool used, in HTML format) into your ILIAS course and provide further online resources for self-learning (e.g. web links, pdf files).

4. Deepening and collaborative learning activities
Encourage your students during self-study phases to intensively deal with the learning content by including collaborative learning activities in your scenario.
ILIAS offers a range of learning tools for this purpose, with which students can interact or create common learning outcomes (e.g. Etherpad, Forum, Upload-Folder, Wiki, Blog, Data Collection). In small groups, students can e.g. work together on problem-based tasks using appropriate tools.
Results of work submitted via ILIAS can also be commented and evaluated constructively and critically by students in an automatically assigned peer feedback process.
The creation of a multimedia e-portfolio can be used as a learning diary and to accompany and document practical and research projects.

5. Web conference / online meeting
A shared learning experience is especially important in seminars, especially to maintain the motivation of the students. The contact time required for this can be made possible, for example, through regular (e.g. biweekly) online meetings.
Make these online meetings as interactive as possible and involve the students in the active design of these online presence sessions.

Course template "Seminar" for download
We have created a course template "Seminar" for you:
- You can use the templates to access an already created course structure. Especially if you have not worked a lot with ILIAS so far, this can be helpful.
- Adapt the templates so that they fit your semester planning. The existing structure is only an example.
- The templates mainly show the basic functions ILIAS has to offer. Of course, we are happy to also show you further functions.
Download
Here you will find the ILIAS course templates, as well as an online tutorial, where you will learn how to copy the course templates.
Notes on the use of the course templates:
- In order to use our templates, you must first log in to the central learning platform of the University of Freiburg with your university account. You can only see the course links to the templates once you are logged in.
- Then please navigate to the original templates (folder: Course Templates) using the course links provided here and then copy the template. We have also described all steps in the online tutorial for you.
