Implementing online exams with ILIAS
General information
In order to be able to conclude the digital semester with digital examinations, the E-Learning department offers various options for taking examinations using the different ILIAS systems (ILIAS-Lehre and ILIAS-Exam).
Find out about the different digital examination scenarios here and check which scenario best suits your needs.

Examination location
In order to be able to take digital examinations, two different ILIAS systems are available to you for organising and conducting the examinations.
1. ILIAS-Lehre - for upload forms of examination (https://ilias.uni-freiburg.de)
ILIAS-Lehre is the learning platform that you usually use in the regular teaching context during the semester. However, since not all examination scenarios can be carried out in this virtual environment, there is also a special ILIAS client, the "ILIAS-Exam".
2. ILIAS-Exam - for all electronic examination forms (https://eklausur.uni-freiburg.de)
Teachers who have already taken e-exams (MC / Questions with freetext) as part of their teaching are already familiar with the ILIAS-Exam-Server. This is an ILIAS installation that fulfils certain technical requirements in order to meet the framework conditions for e-examinations.

Which digital examination scenarios can we currently offer?
1. upload exam
- In the exercise module of ILIAS, Take Home Exams can be carried out according to the "Download - work - Upload" model, in which a file with examination tasks is downloaded by the students, then worked on offline and finally a solution sheet is uploaded again.
- This type of exam is particularly suitable if your examinees are expected to write longer texts. You can annotate the exam results afterwards and upload the edited version.
- Advantage: This type of examination places lower demands on the students' technical equipment (e.g. internet connection), as they do not have to be online during the entire examination.
- Disadvantage: Automated correction of single- or multiple-choice questions is not possible.
Please Note: There are various options for the "upload examination" type of examination. For example, whether the examinees are supervised by a video proctor during the examination or not, or whether the examinees take their examination paper-based or formulate texts on the computer. Find out about the different possibilities and the appropriate technical tools in our overview "Examination Scenarios".
2. e-examination forms:
- Live online exams can be written in the ILIAS test module, where students have to be online in ILIAS during the entire exam and enter their solutions directly in ILIAS (e.g. single or multiple choice, assignment questions, open questions).
- This type of exam is particularly suitable if you want to score your exam automatically. It is *not* suitable for longer texts (essays, many open questions etc.). Please note: Annotating texts or uploading corrections for later examination viewing is *not* possible with this exam type. If you would like to annotate files of this exam format afterwards, we recommend saving these edited texts internally in a safe place.
- Disadvantage: This examination format places higher demands on the students' technical equipment (e.g. internet connection), as they have to be online during the entire examination.
- Advantage: Automated correction of single- or multiple-choice questions is possible.
