Forum
What is a Forum?
A forum (virtual forum) is a place where people can discuss with each other and exchange their opinions. The ILIAS object "Forum" is designed for this purpose. Compared to a chat, here communication takes place asynchronously. In many cases, a forum is divided into different topics or "threads" for which entries can then be written by the participants of the forum.
What can the Forum be used for?
A forum can be used for very different purposes. It is common to all scenarios that it is used for communication between people on specific issues. For example, you can use a forum:
- to ask for the opinion on a specific topic
- to exchange information on important questions on a topic, e.g. "Which guidelines are to be observed when preparing the required assessment?”
- and much more.
Example: Discussion in a seminar context
In seminars, for example in degree programs in the field of humanities, texts are very often discussed by scientists who are familiar with the topic. The texts are usually accompanied by several key questions or thematic priorities which structure the discussion and focus on important contents. Such a discussion can also be realized in a forum, for example. Subdivided into different topics, students and teachers can then discuss them with each other in virtual space.
Extension: For the ILIAS object "Forum" an additional function, the "Rating" can be activated. This allows participants to rate the contributions of the forum with a star rating. This function can help to get an insight into the students' assessment of certain issues.
The following link will take you to a "sample forum" where the rating is activated:
