Certificate
What is a Certificate?
In ILIAS, it is possible to issue a certificate in PDF format to students for successful learning. This can either show a grade or simply confirm participation.
Setting up a certificate requires a certain amount of effort the first time. However, this procedure only needs to be run through once. Afterwards, the certificate can be exported and reused for other objects of this type.
What can the Certificate be used for?
Certificates are available in ILIAS for courses, groups, submission tasks/exercises and SCORM learning modules. They can be individually designed and provided. Each certificate is individualised by ILIAS with information about the participant(s) and the corresponding object (course, submission task/exercise, etc.) by ILIAS automatically inserting the name of the participant(s), their grade and, if applicable, further data into a certificate template.

How does it work?
The following tutorials describe the procedures in detail:
1. In the "Settings" tab of a course or group, click on the sub-menu "Certificate" below the tab.
2. Activate the checkbox "Active" to activate the certificate immediately.
Note: As soon as you save this status, ILIAS automatically generates certificates for all participants who pass or have already passed the course. Alternatively, you can prepare the certificate first and activate it later.
3. If necessary, adjust the following information:
- Page format
- Background image (.png, .jpg)
Note: To ensure the readability of the certificate, you should only choose very light background images. For the background image, it is best to create a complete certificate template in A4 format with integrated logo, header and footer (fixed text parts), if applicable, and upload it in png format. - If necessary, upload an image for tiling (.svg).
- Distance from the top of the page in cm, mm, in, pt, pc, px or em.
- Margins of the text area in cm, mm, in, pt, pc, px or em
- Enter the text of the certificate. You can use the personalisation placeholders listed below the text entry field to automatically include, for example, the name of the course or submission task/exercise and the participant(s).
Note: Make sure to always use the placeholders with the square brackets so that ILIAS can identify them.
Note: If some data is not available for a user, it will be omitted during the automatic creation of the certificate.
4. If the status is set to "active", the certificate can be previewed (and subsequently adjusted if necessary).
5. Click on the "Save" button to create the certificate.
6. Participants who have achieved pass status (in the course or submission task/exercise) can now download the certificate in PDF format.
Outside of the course/exercise, the certificate is displayed to participants in the "Learning achievements" area in the main menu bar on the left and is available for download.
Within the exercise, the certificate is offered above the accordion with the exercise units. There, after a student has passed all compulsory exercise units, the button "Certificate" appears.
ILIAS offers the possibility to export ready set up and saved certificates as a ZIP file in order to reuse them later e.g. in other courses, groups, submission tasks/exercises or on other ILIAS installations.
In the "Settings" tab you will find the submenu "Certificate". Click on the "Export certificate" button above or below the "Create/edit certificate template" screen.
ILIAS generates the export file and opens the download dialogue of your browser.
To import a certificate, click on the "Browse" button in the "Import" section, select the ZIP file and upload it. Click on the "Save" button to import the certificate from ILIAS.
