SCORM Learning Module
What is a SCORM Learning Module?
- Presentation mode: In this mode, digital learning units (learning modules) that already exist e.g. have been created with other authoring tools (Articulate Storyline, Dreamweaver, Lectora) can be embedded in ILIAS. This is the most common application scenario of this ILIAS object.
- Author mode: You can use this ILIAS object to create a SCORM module on ILIAS yourself which you can then make available on other learning platforms (e.g. Moodle). However, this option requires some practice.
What can the SCORM Learning Module be used for?
- Why is digital learning content created with other authoring tools? As in other technical areas, the different authoring tools offer different design and didactic options. (Excursus: This phenomenon could also be applied to other software products: Some authors prefer to use the applications of LibreOffice, while others prefer the Office applications of Windows.) It is similar with authoring tools for digital learning content.
- If you do not want to create your digital learning content with the authoring tools provided by ILIAS (e.g. ILIAS learning module, ILIAS learning sequence, ILIAS test etc.) but use other software applications (authoring tools), you can do this and then upload the created content on ILIAS using the "SCORM learning module". However, it is required that that your freely chosen authoring tool can generate the "SCORM" format.
Example: Using digital learning contents of colleagues
You might know a colleague at another university who has already created digital learning content on a specific topic, for example "Basic Module in Statistics ". However, this colleague does not use ILIAS as an authoring tool (or generally as a learning platform), but creates all content with Lectora and makes it available on the homepage of the institute.
You both know each other well and it is okay for both of you that this online module is also used by you in the course on ILIAS. Now you can ask your colleague to send you the "Basic Module in Statistics" in SCORM format. Using the ILIAS object "SCORM learning module" you can now easily upload this SCORM file on the ILIAS learning platform and make it available to your students as a learning object.
