Export
What is an Export?
At many places on the learning platform (the learning management system) ILIAS, it is possible to create export files. It usually depends on the respective ILIAS object (e.g. courses, groups, tests, etc.), if this function is provided. It is important to note that there are two different types of exports:
- For many objects on ILIAS (e.g. the ILIAS object "Course"), export files of the complete object can be created. With this function, it is possible to, for example, transfer a course from one ILIAS installation to another ILIAS installation. The export file will then be provided in XML file format.
- For some objects on ILIAS (e.g. "Data Collection" or "Survey"), it is possible to export the data collected in the object. In many cases, an export in form of Excel files is possible. However, this is not the export of the entire "ILIAS object" as described in the first case.
What can the Export be used for?
The export functions of ILIAS can be used for different purposes. Again, we distinguish between the two cases:
- Export function of ILIAS objects:
- The export function of the ILIAS objects can be used, for example, to pass on created materials as Open Educational Resources (OER) to other teachers. However, this is only possible if the other institution also works with the ILIAS Learning Management System. Otherwise, the file cannot be imported onto the system.
- Furthermore, the function can be used to make a backup of certain ILIAS materials. The created XML file can then be saved on your local computer like other files and imported into the ILIAS system at any time.
- Export of collected data:
- The use of the export function can often be combined with the purpose of the actual data collection. For example, you want to create a report in a survey and you need the data from the system for this.
- In the case of a data collection that is used for the collection of literature, an Excel file can be created afterwards, which can then be archived as a literature list, independent of the corresponding object on ILIAS.
