What is a Badge?
In the e-learning context, a badge is a digital certificate or learning badge that confirms the existence of certain skills or knowledge, for example within the Open Badges system.
(cf. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badge, as of April 16, 2021)
Badges can either be assigned manually or automatically in ILIAS. A badge is created by the course admin in a course and contains, in addition to an image file, a mandatory description as well as the criteria required for an award. A badge can be provided with an expiration date.
What can the Badge be used for?
According to Recommendation of the HRK of 24/11/2020 on "Micro-Degrees and Badges as Formats of Digital Additional Qualification" the need for badges as digital proof of competence arises from the increased individualization of (academic) educational pathways: In addition to the traditional teaching of competencies in degree programs, academic continuing education programs, and doctoral programs, non-formal and informal competencies are becoming increasingly important. This applies in particular to the transition between educational systems. At these transition points, badges can be used to store information about acquired learning outcomes in coded form. This information includes, for example, exam results, homework, excerpts from an e-portfolio and, above all, key competencies (handling digital data, social engagement, project experience, language skills as well as intercultural experience).
Awarded badges are listed in ILIAS for the respective user under "Achievements". Like other Achievements and Learning History available in ILIAS (Certificates) they can be integrated into a Portfolio and optionally shared to be displayed in the user's "Visiting Card" (Profile).
ILIAS offers two types of badges in the context of courses:
- "Course LP (Learning Progress)": this type of badge is automatically awarded when certain objects in the course have been successfully worked on.
- "Merit": This type of badge can only be awarded manually within courses (by course administrators/tutors to course members).
How does it work?
To assign badges within a course, proceed as follows:
1. Activate the badge functionality in your course.
To do this, select the "Badges" option in the Settings tab (section "Additional functions"). After saving, ILIAS will now display an additional tab "Badges" in the course.
2. Create the badges:
In the "Badges" tab, select what kind of badge you want to create from the "Type" menu above the (possibly still empty) table before clicking "Create" next to it:
- "Course LP (automatic)"
- "Merit (manual)"
Fill in the Title, Description and Criteria fields in the form. All information will be visible to badge viewers later. Upload an image in png or svg format. Optionally, enter an expiration date for the badge ("Valid until").
Check the "Active" option (if the badge should be able to be awarded immediately) and finally click "Save".
If the badge is to be awarded automatically, select one or more objects whose successful editing (learning progress status "Edited") triggers the awarding of the badge.
3. Assign badges manually (if applicable):
In the "Badges" tab, open the "Users" view. From the menu, select which badge you would like to award and click "Award Badge" next to it.
Then select one or more from the list of your course members and click "Execute". Alternatively, you can also award a badge to an individual user by selecting the corresponding option from the "Actions" menu of an entry in the "Badges" view.
