Feature of the month: Glossary - now with integrated flashcards!
ILIAS 9 has added a particularly practical feature: Flashcards directly in the Glossary! Terms and definitions can now be queried interactively and systematically - ideal for repeating and consolidating knowledge.
What's new?
Previously, in ILIAS 8, flashcards had to be created as a separate object and then linked to a Glossary. This was functional, but cumbersome - especially in terms of maintenance and administration.
With ILIAS 9, a separate Flashcards object is no longer necessary: The flashcard function is now integrated directly into the Glossary. This means that a Glossary is all you need to collect terms and learn them in flashcard mode. This makes administration much easier and more intuitive - a real plus for teachers and learners.
How does it work?
Create a Glossary in your course or open an existing one.
Activate the “Flashcard training” option in the settings and select the desired mode (term vs. definition or definition vs. term).
Add terms with definitions - manually or via bulk import (e.g. from Excel).
Use the integrated Flashcard view and start training immediately.
The system is based on the tried-and-tested Leitner principle: correctly answered cards are moved to the next learning box, incorrect ones back to the beginning - for sustainable and repetition-based learning.
What can it look like?
Here is an example of text-based flashcard training:
Where is this useful in university teaching?
Flashcards are versatile and can be used in all subject areas, as images and videos can also be inserted:
- Medical training: efficiently repeat Latin terminology with flashcards
- Language courses: Store vocabulary in the Glossary and memorise it regularly using Flashcards
- Law: Prepare legal definitions and actively learn them in a structured way
- Art history: Assign works to an era or an artist
TIP: Glossaries can also be created collaboratively with students to develop a shared knowledge base on a topic. And students can create their own Glossaries and Flashcard training courses in the student learning groups.
Try it out now and turn the Glossary into an active learning tool - easier, more flexible and more effective than ever before!
